Photo and description

Medina Tetouana is one of the most interesting and main historical sights of the major cultural center of Morocco - Tetouan. Medina Tetouana is one of the smallest and most beautiful Moroccan medines. It practically did not collapse and did not undergo various kinds of influences, therefore, it has survived to this day the most complete.

The old town of Tetouan is under the protection of UNESCO and is a World Heritage Site. Most experts called it the most picturesque in Morocco. Situated in the narrow streets of the Medina, the buildings have a distinctive Andalusian style and make an unforgettable impression. Medina Tetouana is surrounded by powerful walls, built at the end of the 15th century, with seven gates that lead to the city.

In the inner part of the ancient city, there are quarters of different historical eras. The earliest houses were built here in the XII century, and the latest in the XIX century. In the old Medina, you can see a large number of picturesque Andalusian-style houses with patios, that is, an inner courtyard, as well as elegant mansions framed by beautiful columns and original arcades. The buildings are decorated with ornaments from mosaic patterns, painted wood panels, unique plaster moldings, etc. Around the buildings there are broken gardens that give shade and light coolness.

Medina Square is the heart of the old city. It is surrounded by mausoleums and stately mosques. Not far from one of the entrances to the Medina is the famous Royal Court, which is considered one of the most beautiful architectural landmarks.

In Medina, in addition to religious buildings and residential buildings, there is a huge number of bazaars and various cozy shops. The narrow streets of the old town smell of fresh sawdust, cesar bread and spices. Also, at every step you can meet tanners, carpenters, joiners, shoemakers who make wonderful soft shoes, junk dealers and cloth distributors.
