Dendrological garden named after S.F. Kharitonova is one of the `` green '' sights of Pereslavl-Zalessky. The garden is located on a hill in the southwestern part of the city, from where a panoramic view of the picturesque Pleshcheyevo Lake and the ancient city opens.

The Dendrological Garden was founded on the initiative of Sergei Fedorovich Kharitonov, an honored Russian forester. In 1950 S.F. Kharitonov seriously carried out serious introductory work. The first experiments on the acclimatization of deciduous and coniferous species were carried out by him on a personal plot.

In 1952, the forestry was allocated a 1 hectare land plot on a vacant lot, where introduced plants were planted. Systematic work on the introduction and selection and expansion of the collection of shrub and tree species began in the 1960s.

Since 1962, the area of the dendrological garden has increased to 20 hectares. Plantations of chokeberry, Siberian cedar, Siberian larch, various forms of spruce, etc. were laid.

In 1978, large-scale work began on the development of new territories of the garden in accordance with the general plan for the expansion and reconstruction of the arboretum.

The project of dendrological plantings was carried out in a landscape style. According to this project, the placement of plants was carried out according to the botanical and geographical principle. All plants are represented here in eight geographical divisions: Crimea and the Caucasus, North America, the Far East, Siberia, Japan and China, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Western Europe. Plants were planted in groups of various densities and shapes at the age of 3-5 years.

Together with the exposition departments, experimental and experimental plots were also laid out belonging to various scientific institutions of the country.

The modern dendrological garden is a huge work of forest departments and foresters with the participation of the administration and city educational institutions. Thanks to them, the dendrological garden is a natural object of great scientific, cultural, economic and educational value.

Currently, the area of the dendrological garden is 58 hectares. More than six hundred names of shrubs and trees grow here, which represent 129 genera and 43 families. The most numerous are representatives of rosaceous, pine, maple, birch, willow, honeysuckle.

Plants in the arboretum are planted in the form of alley plantings, groups, between them there are numerous paths from which it is very convenient for visitors to view the collections.

Today the activity of the arboretum is a wide production, educational and research work.

Dendrosad in Pereslavl-Zalessky is a huge collection of plant resources, among which you can find plants from different parts of the earth. On the territory of the garden, there are two experimental sites: the All-Russian Research Institute of Forestry and Mechanization, where economically valuable conifers are grown; and the Main Botanical Garden of the Russian Academy of Sciences with the apricot population; as well as the exposition of the Institute of Medicinal Plants with medicinal plants, where they carry out research and experimental work, demonstrating the achievements of selection and genetics.

In the dendrological garden, thematic lessons, seminars, practice for students are held, circles, lecture schools, which contribute to the upbringing of ecological culture, function here.
