The garden is located on a hill in the southwestern part of the city, from where a panoramic view of the picturesque Pleshcheyevo Lake and the ancient city opens. The Dendrological Garden was founded on the initiative of Sergei Fedorovich Kharitonov, an honored Russian forester. In 1950 S.F. Kharitonov seriously carried out serious introductory work. The first experiments on the acclimatization of deciduous and coniferous species were carried out by him on a personal plot. In 1952, the forestry was allocated a 1 hectare land plot on a vacant lot, where introduced plants were planted. Systematic work on the introduction and selection and expansion of the collection of shrub and tree species began in the 1960s. Since 1962, the area of the dendrological garden has increased to 20 hectares. Plantations of chokeberry, Siberian cedar, Siberian larch, various forms of spruce, etc. were laid. In 1978, large-scale work began on the development of new territories of the garden in accordance with the general plan for the expansion and reconstruction of the arboretum.
