The Art Museum is a part of the Cherepovets Museum Association. From the structure of the local history museum, he stood out in 1938, and 19 years later, in 1957, for exhibitions of art collections, he was given a small room on Lenin Street, where the museum was located until 1992. Now the art museum is located in a two-story building No. 30-a (on the top floor) on Sovetsky Prospekt. The two exhibition halls cover an area of 1000 m2. There are permanent expositions: "Russian art of the late 18th - early 20th centuries", "Russian Orthodox art of the 14th-19th centuries" and "Folk art of the Vologda region".

In the exposition "Russian art of the late 18th-early 20th centuries" you can see paintings by famous Russian artists: Borovikovsky, Rokotov, Tyurin, Makarov, Tyutryumov, Bogolyubov, Repin, Kustodiev and others. The works of Jean-Laurent Monier and Johann-Baptiste Lampi are presented. Particularly noteworthy is the painting "The Appearance of an Angel to the Shepherds" by the artist Petrovsky (student of K. Bryullov), awarded in 1839 with the Big Gold Medal.

In addition to the painting exhibition, there is glass from the era of Catherine II, artistic bronze, Russian and German porcelain and musical instruments (polyphon, micophone, gramophone, gramophone).

The exposition "Russian Orthodox Art of the XIV-XIX centuries" presents unique monuments of icon painting, facial sewing, early printed and handwritten books, cult casting (panagias, crosses, folds and others), mother of pearl, wood sculpture. Here you can see the oldest and only icon of the XIV century in the Vologda region, which depicts St. Nicholas, especially revered in Russia. The icons of the XV-XVII centuries are very beautiful. They were created by local craftsmen under the influence of the icon-painting centers of Tver, Rostov, Novgorod and the art of the peasants of the Russian North. They were exhibited in Genoa, Vatican, Japan, Macedonia, Florence, Cyprus. In addition, the exhibition presents the work "John the Theologian in Silence" by the master of the Armory Chamber T. Ivanov and 2 signed icons, one of which belongs to the brush of the icon painter I. Grigoriev. The exhibits of the 17th century obverse sewing are very interesting: the Shroud "The Entombment of Jesus Christ", church banners, clergy's vestments and others.

The museum's book collection is represented by handwritten and early printed books of the 15th-19th centuries. You can see samples of Old Russian handwriting. Among the early printed books, the Octoechus, dated 1594, stands out. The exhibition of folk art acquaints visitors with household items and clothes of northern peasants of the Novgorod province. Here you can also see local spinning wheels, sledges, hats for women, sewn with river pearls, including Sheksna pearls.

A small gallery of contemporary art has been formed at the art museum. The work of local and visiting artists is presented here, regardless of the manner of writing and style. In addition, exhibitions of future artists - students of the School of Arts and the Department of Art and Graphics of the ChGU are organized here. In one of the museum's painting halls - the Blue Living Room - poetry, musical, creative meetings and evenings are held; presentation of books and booklets is organized.

The open-air museum, which displays the temples of the Assumption in the village of Nelazskoye and St. Nicholas in the village of Dmitrievo, made of wood, is a branch of the art museum. They date back to the second half of the 17th century. The interior decoration of churches and their unique construction and design features provide an excellent opportunity to observe the masterpieces of Russian architecture.
