The formation of the archaeological museum began in the 1870s. The work of the Cherepovets Museum is associated with the name and archaeological activities of E.V. Barsova. Professional historians and archeologists have been working in the museum since the 80s of the last century. The archaeological museum has been located in a separate building since 1987 (Krasnaya street, 1b). The museum funds include 100 thousand ancient items. The museum is part of the Cherepovets Museum Association. More than 2000 items are presented at the exhibitions.

The museum's archaeologists continue to study the archeological monuments of the Vologda region, collaborate with various research centers throughout the country. Over the past 20 years of work, employees of the archaeological association have discovered more than 400 archaeological sites during excavations, more than 30 monuments of the Stone Age and Medieval times have been studied in detail. Based on the results of this painstaking work, research was carried out, scientific articles were written by the staff. The museum fund was replenished with valuable archaeological finds. The museum has a permanent exhibition entitled "From the Depth of Ages". Every year in the departments of the Cherepovets Archaeological Museum, reporting exhibitions are held, which are called "Finds of the Season." before metal processing, a complex process that does not occur in nature. The peculiarity of the exposition is the approach of museum visitors (especially children) to the perception of methods of processing stone, metals, clay, tree.

On the basis of the Cherepovets Museum, there are two expeditions that conduct excavations. One of them is studying historical monuments in the basin of the White Lake and the Sheksna River. This expedition was also engaged in the study of settlements and burial grounds on the rivers Sheksna, Sogozh, Suda, Andoga. The second archaeological expedition is studying the monuments of primitive times (monuments of the X-XIV centuries). This expedition conducted research on more than a dozen sites of the distant Mesolithic era, it was at this time that the region began to be populated by people. This expedition explored the settlements that are located on the territory of Cherepovets - Cathedral Hill, Oktyabrsky Bridge, Uryvkovo.

For several years, an expedition of the archaeological museum has been excavating a unique historical monument in the Rybinsk reservoir - the settlement of Lukovets (this is an ancient Russian center, which has been known since the 10th century). The expedition is headed by N.V. Kosorukova is a researcher at the Cherepovets Museum.

In the city of Cherepovets, interest in the work of archaeological researchers is growing. For a long time, children from school camps have been working on the basis of expeditions, schoolchildren get their first experience of research work. History students practice here. Museum staff conduct excursions and lectures for residents of the city of Cherepovets, its guests, organizes the work of electives and clubs for students.
