Photo and description

The Church of the Intercession is located in Pereslavl-Zalessky, on Pleshcheevskaya street, 13a. It was built in 1789. After some time, a three-tiered bell tower crowned with a spire was attached to it.

The Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos is almost the only one in all of Pereslavl that has retained its original layout and interior setting, since it was not closed in Soviet times, it services continued to be held.

First, on the site of the Intercession Church, a wooden temple of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa, mentioned in the scribes of 1628, was erected. In 1659, it was replaced by a new church in the name of the Intercession of the Virgin, also built of wood. And only 130 years later, at the expense of the merchant Bykov and the district secretary of Tolsky, the current church was erected.

In those years, the Church of the Intercession stood on the bustling Market Square, where there were shops, warehouses and taverns. Trade in Pereslavl was going well, and therefore on market days it was especially noisy and crowded. The Church of the Intercession was not alone here, but its “neighbors” have not survived to this day.

The church building has preserved many architectural details made in the Baroque style, popular in the middle of the 18th century. In general, it is recognized as almost the best preserved monument of the Moscow Baroque in Pereslavl-Zalessky. The compositional solution "octagon on a quadruple" ends with a huge, high and wide hemispherical vault, on which a small drum with a dome is installed. Lucarnes (circular light holes) are cut in the dome. On the east side, a large apse is attached to the church. There are 2 chapels in it: in honor of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos and in the name of the Entry into the Temple of the Most Holy Theotokos. The windows are decorated with baroque carved frames. On the walls of the temple from the outside, paintings on biblical themes have survived, paintings inside − fairly new, but also in fair condition.

A strong impression is made by the three-tiered bell tower, which is completed not with a dome, but with a high spire on an intricate base.

Church utensils and icons from the abolished neighboring churches were brought to the Intercession Church. This is how one of the most valuable icons survived here, which is currently kept in the Pereslavl Museum - the icon of Peter and Paul, dated to the 15th century (from the destroyed Peter and Paul Church).

Today, the Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos is located at a distance from a busy central street, surrounded by tall trees and small houses.
