Photo and description

When planning a walk around the Dutch city of Rotterdam, you should definitely include Cubic Houses - a famous residential complex located next to the Old Port on Overblaak Street, right above the Blaak metro station and along is considered one of the most impressive local attractions.

Cubic houses were built in 1984 by the famous Dutch architect-innovator Pete Blom and represent an original complex consisting of 38 standard cubic houses connected to each other and two so-called super-cubes. According to the author's idea, Cubic houses were to become a “village in a big city” with cozy courtyards and their own infrastructure (schools, shops, offices, etc.), where a separate house symbolizes a tree, and the whole complex - a forest, therefore the Dutch often call the Cubic houses of Rotterdam - "Blaakse Bos" ("Blaax Forest").

The peculiarity of a separate structure is that such a house looks like a cube resting at a certain angle on one of its peaks on a high hexagonal pylon (inside it is hollow and there is a ladder in it, along which one can climb into the cube). At the same time, a standard cube is a separate three-story apartment, where a living room and a kitchen are located on the first floor, as a rule, there are two bedrooms and a bathroom on the second floor, but the third floor is usually used as an office, recreation area or winter garden. The area of such an apartment is about 100 sq. m, but due to the specific slope of the walls, part of the space is unusable and visually it seems much smaller. However, you can see this for yourself by visiting the museum - "Kijk-kubus" located in one of the cubic houses. You can also look into one of the super cubes, where the StayOkey hostel has been opened since 2009.
