Photo and description

There is a fortress two hundred meters from the old port on the southern end of the Palmova embankment. Once upon a time there were Byzantine fortifications on this place, and in 1191 the English king Richard the Lionheart and Berengaria of Navarre were married in the chapel. The fortress that exists today was built at the beginning of the XIV century. under the Lusignans. It was rebuilt in 1570 by the Turks who captured the island. In the middle of the last century, the fortress was reconstructed by the British, under whom, since 1940, it was used as a prison and an army headquarters. In 1974, the exhibits of the Nicosia Museum of the Middle Ages were transferred to the fortress, the building of which turned out to be in the buffer zone separating the Greeks and Turks.
