The title in English is Burg Taggenbrunn. Photo and descriptionTaggenbrunn Castle is located on the top of one of the hills in the municipality of Sankt Georgen am Lengsee in Carinthia. It was built on the remains of a Celtic-Roman settlement dating from the 6th century BC. e. The fortress appeared here in the first third of the XII century. It was built by Taghenus von Pongau by order of the Archbishop of Salzburg. In the XIV-XV centuries, the castle was destroyed several times during military campaigns, but almost immediately restored, at the same time expanding and improving it. One of these reconstructions took place in the period from 1497 to 1503 under Archbishop Leonard von Koitschach. At the same time, a large granary was built next to the castle, which has been ideally preserved to this day. It is not known exactly when and why Taggenbrunn Castle was abandoned and began to collapse. But in 1796, one of the written sources mentions his deplorable state. In 1803, the sovereign principality of Taggenbrunn ceased to exist, and the castle became the property of the state. In 1858 it was acquired by Anthony von Reyer, then it was successively owned by Messrs. Paulitz and Klensig. In 2011, the castle was bought by the entrepreneur, the owner of the watch manufacturing business, Alfred Riedl. He enthusiastically set about restoring the historic fortress, of which only a few towers and partly the fortress wall have survived. For the restoration work, the architect Herbert Dusan was invited to carry out the renovation of the historical monument under the supervision of the Association for the Protection of Landmarks. In April 2015, the restoration work was completed and the castle was opened to visitors.
