Photo and description

One of the oldest castle complexes in Carinthia, Falkenstein fortress consists of two parts: Lower and Upper Falkenstein. The Lower Castle is currently in excellent condition, while the Upper Castle, located near a mountain stream, which can be reached on foot in 25 minutes, was seriously damaged during the construction of the tunnel. The chapel of John the Baptist was first mentioned in a written source in 1246 and was significantly expanded and rebuilt in a Baroque manner in 1772. It is still used today.

After the disappearance of the Falkenstein dynasty in 1300, the Upper and Lower Castles were divided between the local nobles. Throughout their history, the fortresses have changed their owners more than once. There was a time when one of them belonged to the Habsburgs.

Until now, the Lower Castle is privately owned. It is open to tourists only during the summer months. This building can be rented for any celebration: weddings,
