Designed by the English Colonel Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob, the building was created in honor of Prince Edward VII of Wales, and in 1876, during the monarch's visit to India, his first stone was laid. The construction was completed only 11 years later - in 1887. The museum is located on the territory of the Ram Nishas garden just opposite the New Gate.
