Photo and description

One of the largest castles in Ukraine is the Staroselsky castle, which is located in the village of Staroye Selo, Pustomyty district, Lviv region. The castle covers an area of about 2 hectares, and is considered the strongest castle in the Lviv region, since it repeatedly held back the attack of ill-wishers and at the same time remained intact.

Staroselsky castle was erected in 1589 with the participation of Lviv architect Ambroziy Prikhilny. During the construction of the castle, stone and brick were used, as well as a mixture of lime, egg yolk and milk, which gave unprecedented strength to its walls. The castle had the shape of an irregular pentagon, with six towers adjoining its walls, which were higher than the castle wall. One could get to the territory of the castle through a drawbridge located on the south side of the fortification.

The castle survived many sieges, but after the Cossacks attacked it in 1648, the building was badly damaged. A year later, the Staroselskaya fortress was restored. In 1672, the Turks began to take castles one after another, but the Staroselsky castle was so powerful and strong that the Turks did not manage to break through its walls.

Since 1939, the castle was in the possession of Alfred Pototsky, who housed distilleries, a brewery and warehouses for vegetables in it, which led to the destruction of the castle.

Despite the fact that the Staroselsky castle is in a dilapidated state, it still looks like a formidable fortress. All that has survived from the castle to this day is its huge fortress walls, about 15 m high and about 2 m wide, fortified with buttresses and three towers, one of which is decorated with a stone crown.

Since 2010, the Staroselsky castle has been devoted to the concessionaire M. Ryba, the general director of Chris LLC, who promised to take the architectural monument out of the emergency state. After that, the castle should act as a tourist and recreational center.
