The title in English is Panagia Church. Photo and descriptionThe small resort town of Lindos, located on the southeast coast of Rhodes, is one of the most picturesque and architecturally interesting cities on the island. One of the most interesting sights of Lindos after the Acropolis are considered the ancient Orthodox Church of the Virgin, which is located almost in the center of the city. The temple was built in the 13th century on the foundations of an older religious building. Since its construction, the Church of the Virgin has been reconstructed several times, and some annexes have been added. The greatest changes in the appearance of the temple were made in the 1489-90s. The repair and reconstruction of the temple was carried out by order of the Grand Master of the Order of St. John Pierre Aubusson. The church is a cross-domed church with an octagonal dome, snow-white walls and a red tiled roof. The most striking feature of the church is the high stone bell tower. The church is surrounded by high walls, and its courtyard is lined with mosaics of black and white pebbles. The decoration of the church is an ancient carved wooden iconostasis, which dates back to the 17th century. Huge bronze chandeliers with candlesticks hang from the ceiling. The walls and vaulted ceiling of the Orthodox church are decorated with beautiful old frescoes, the oldest of which dates back to 1637. Most of the frescoes date from the late 18th century. These are the works of the famous artist Gregory Simi depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin, Jesus and the saints.
