One of the outstanding monuments of Novgorod architecture is the Church of Fyodor Stratilat on the Rucheya, built in 1360-1361 by the mayor Semyon Andreevich. The name of the church preserves the memory of a stream filled up in the 20th century, and a church was built on the bank.

To imagine what the temple looked like in the XIV century, you need to mentally remove the bell tower and the refectory, which appeared only in the XVII century. The cubic, one-domed Fyodorovskaya Church for a long time became a model for Novgorod architects, since for the first time its facades were decorated with small arches, lancet windows, niches (some were painted with frescoes).

There is a place in the temple that deserves close attention - a staircase in the wall leading to the choir. Many inscriptions (original ancient graffiti) were found there, in particular, exercises in writing the alphabet (for example, the expression `` I will go by the beaver near the river '' is repeated five times). Probably, the church taught to read and write future deacons. Since the church was built on private funds, a family tomb was built at the southern facade, and the chapel of Simeon the Stylite, patron saint of the patron of the patron saint, was built in the choir.
