In the second half of the 19th century, the construction of new buildings and landscaping of the area around the Kuressaare castle began. It all started from the moment the town of Kuressaare acquired the resort status, thanks to the discovery of the deposit and the active use of healing clay. In those years, a large number of people came here for treatment and rest. Therefore, it became necessary to bring the territory around the castle in order.

In 1861, a park committee was created, whose responsibilities included the functions of creating and managing the park. This year is considered the time when the Kuressaare City Park was founded.

Since the founding, city residents have been of great help, providing money, seedlings, in addition, for construction work, they have offered horses and carts.

The park was laid out on the site of an old church and a vacant lot around the fortress. In order to honor the memory of those who were buried in this church and at its walls, a monument was erected. On one side of the monument, the history of the park is described, on the other, Schiller's lines “Wirke Gutes, du nahrest der Menschheit gottliche Pflanze” are carved.

In 1930, rare plant species were brought to Kuressaare City Park from the University of Tartu ... Thanks to this, a beautiful park appears in front of us, where you can find about 80 species of trees and shrubs. The park regularly hosts open-air concerts. You can not only have fun, but also enjoy the clean air, beautiful nature of the Kuressaare city park.
