Photo and description

The Capuchin Drama Theater is the oldest theater in the city of Luxembourg. The theater is located in the very heart of the old city on Teatralnaya Square in a beautiful old mansion of the 17th century and is perhaps one of the best places for cultural leisure in Luxembourg.

The building was built in 1623 and was a monastery for monks -capuchins up to 1795. After Luxembourg was occupied by the French, the building began to be used as a powder warehouse, then as a food warehouse, and subsequently a military garrison bakery was located here.

In 1867, the building was transferred to the jurisdiction of the city authorities, and already in In 1869, the first Luxembourg City Theater was opened in an old monastery, which for a long time remained the only one in the city.

In the fall of 1959, construction began on a new spacious building for the Luxembourg City Theater. Its grand opening took place in April 1964. The building of the old theater was repaired and it became the home of the City Drama Theater. In 1995, as a memory of the fact that Capuchin monks once lived here, the drama theater got its current name - the Theater of the Capuchins.
