Photo and description

The old town hall of Innsbruck was built in 1358. It is located in the historic center of the city, approximately 400 meters from both the main train station and the Hofburg Imperial Palace. The town hall is located on Duke Friedrich's street, popular among tourists.

The town hall building is also popular due to its tower, which was added exactly one hundred years later - in 1442-1450. A couple of years later, this modest building was decorated with an arcade gallery on the ground floor. Then another floor was completed with an elegant attic, and on the top floor there was a spacious reception hall. In the end, the work was completed only in 1658, and since then the appearance of the town hall has remained practically unchanged.

The city hall itself is painted bright red and decorated with a relief made in 1939 for the 700th anniversary of the founding of Innsbruck. It depicts the patron angel of the city, a married couple in national costumes and the city coat of arms.

However, of particular interest, of course, is the city tower, which differs in color and material from the main building of the town hall. Its height reaches 56 meters. It was originally crowned with a pointed spire, but in 1560 it was replaced by the onion-shaped dome typical of the Austrian Renaissance. For many years, the tower of the town hall of Innsbruck served as a fire tower, and now there is an observation deck on its top, from where a stunning view of the city rooftops opens. It is worth noting that the maximum height that tourists are allowed to climb is only 31 meters. To do this, you will have to overcome the distance of 148 steps.

In 1897, the city administration moved to a new building that previously belonged to a luxurious hotel located on another street, Maria Theresa. However, he was badly damaged during the bombing during the Second World War. The new town hall was completely restored in 1947-1948, and in 2002 a modern pavilion with a shopping gallery and a restaurant was added to it.
