Photo and description

The Town Hall of Gmunden is located in the very center of this city, opposite the large Market Square (Marktplatz). This building is in an exquisite Renaissance style and was completed in 1574.

The new town hall is an imposing Italian-style building, divided by a central portal into two symmetrical parts. It consists of four floors, while the first houses cozy cafes open to tourists. The roof of the town hall is decorated with small “bumps” and is bordered on the sides by tiny onion-shaped domes, which is typical of Austrian baroque temples. But, of course, the central part of the town hall is of particular interest.

Three levels above the entrance to the town hall are graceful balconies, divided by a miniature column into two arches and buried in flowers and greenery. And on the last balcony there is an amazing carillon, while all the bells are made of Meissen ceramics. The upper tier of the central facade is decorated with local stucco molding - the city coat of arms, the flag of Austria, and at the very top - the two-headed eagle, the symbol of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. There is also a clock on the top floor of the building. These decorations were added already in 1756, and in 1925 large-scale restoration work was carried out.

It should be noted that two more buildings have survived in the city, where the city administration was located until the 16th century, both of them date back to the 13th century , but have been remodeled in accordance with later architectural styles. Both of these buildings are not so far from the modern town hall, one of them is located on the Market Square. This square also houses many old buildings dating back to the 14th century, and in the side streets you can find the building of the first pharmacy in the Salzkammergut region.
