Photo and description

On the picturesque bank of the Sura river, near the village of Surskoye, Ulyanovsk region, there is a religious monument, according to legends, since 1552. Annually on May 22, the place of pilgrimage - Nikolskaya Mountain with a holy spring becomes a haven for thousands of Christians who came from all over the world.

For many years before becoming a shrine, the "white mountain", devoid of any vegetation, served people as a hill where the sentry was located, reflecting the raids of nomads. But in one of the raids of the Kuban Tatars in 1600, according to legend, a miracle happened with the appearance of a majestic elder with a sword and the icon of St. Nicholas the Pleasant, who miraculously found himself on the top of the "White Mountain". The news, which spread throughout the entire district, began to gather believers around the mountain, so a settlement of Christians was formed. The mountain was named Nikolskaya, a wooden chapel was built on it and the image of the saint was placed there. A small chapel with the face of the saint stood at the top for over 200 years, after which it was replaced by a stone one, and the icon, having changed several limits in 1932, disappeared without a trace.

In our time, Nikolskaya Mountain has not lost its history, during the celebration of the memory of St. Nicholas the Pleasant gathers at its peak more than thirty thousand believers who want to touch the shrine and bathe in a mineralized spring, according to legend, which has healing power. Since ancient times, it was believed that all sins were forgiven when climbing Nikolskaya Mountain on foot.
