Photo and descriptionOn the bank of the Shelon river, exactly 15 km from the town of Porkhov, surrounded by a high pine forest, there is a sanatorium called "Kholomki". Until now, there was the estate of the famous prince Gagarin Andrei Grigorievich - the former rector of the Polytechnic University of St. Petersburg. The estate was built in 1913 according to the project of the architect Fomin I.A. The first descendant of Gagarin was Ivan Sergeevich, who was born in 1754 and was married to Volkonskaya Maria Alekseevna. Initially, Ivan Gagarin served in the navy, where he distinguished himself from the best side during the Battle of Chesme, in which he took part together with the influential Count Orlov, when Princess Tarakanova was kidnapped. The Gagarin family had five children, the eldest of whom was Grigory Grigorievich, having received an excellent education abroad. Andrei Grigorievich was born in 1855 and became the youngest son of Grigory and his wife Dashkova Sofia Andreevna. Prince Andrey studied at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics in the city of St. Petersburg, after which he entered the Mikhailovskaya Artillery Academy. Soon after graduating from the academy, Andrei Grigorievich served in the guards artillery, and also headed a mechanical laboratory at the St. Petersburg Arsenal. After that, he worked at the St. Petersburg arms factory. In the 1890s, the state government began work on the creation of the latest educational institutions, namely polytechnic institutes. An honorable merit of Andrei Grigorievich was the rather quick completion of the construction of not only educational, but also auxiliary institute buildings; the opening of the institute took place in the fall of October 2, 1902. During the period from 1914 to 1915, Prince Ivan Sergeevich was the chairman of the volost local guardianship. During the First World War from 1914 to 1918, the estate housed a hospital that could accommodate fifteen people. It was equipped and fully supported by Andrei Grigorievich. After the October Revolution of 1917 passed, Prince Gagarin provided his manor house for the needs of the first House of Creativity in Russia, which was named after V.I. Lenin; The House of Creativity had another name - the House of Arts. At the same time, Prince Andrei Grigorievich himself also lived in his house after the end of the revolution, collecting paintings and expanding his home library. Since 1920, Gagarin Andrey Grigorievich taught at the Institute of Agriculture, which promoted its activities near Kholomkov. Soon after, Andrei Grigorievich was fired. At the end of the year, on December 22, Andrei Grigorievich fell very seriously ill and died, which happened just on the day of his 65th birthday. The grave of Prince Gagarin is located on the churchyard in the village of Belskoye Ustye, which is two kilometers from Kholomki. After the death of Andrei Grigorievich Gagarin in 1920, writers and artists lived in the estate. After some time, a health resort for children was organized in the estate. At the moment, a tourist recreation center is located in the former Gagarin's house. The estate was transferred to the Polytechnic University in St. Petersburg. Every year the so-called Kholomkovo Local History Readings are held in this house. The Polytechnic University is carrying out restoration work on the estate of Prince Gagarin. The estate has been actively destroyed in recent years. Now the name of the estate sounds like “Educational and historical reserve named after Gagarin”. According to the researcher of the reserve Sorokina Lyubov, the estate in Kholomki was transferred to the Polytechnic University for the balance of 2000. In 2006, it was decided to carry out restoration work on the estate.
