Photo and description

The Pokrovskaya Old Believer Church, or the prayer house of the Borisov Old Believer Community of the Pomor Consent, is an old wooden church built in the 18th century.

Old Believers or bespopovtsy are Orthodox Christians, did not support the Nikonian reforms, for which they were called schismatics. The tsarist authorities waged an irreconcilable struggle with the schismatics at all times, because the charter of the Old Believers does not allow them to recognize any authority except the authority of God.

The wealth of the Old Believers also always aroused envy. These are people who are serious, hardworking, able to earn by their own labor and accumulate a large fortune. In addition, they always keep a closed community and always help each other. Their church services are not conducted in the same way as in the usual Orthodox churches. Knowledge, as in the old days, passed by word of mouth, and the head of the community is elected from the wisest, most pious and respected men.

The schismatics fled to Borisov from tsarist persecution when Borisov was still on the territory of the Commonwealth. Here the community settled and settled down. Even the repression of the communists, who dreamed of an atheistic society, did not force the Old Believers to leave their hometown. In times of adversity, when prayer houses were closed, services were held at parishioners' homes.

After the end of the atheist regime in 1989, the city authorities of Borisov donated an old wooden church built in the 18th century to the Old Believers community, where the Old Believers organized their prayer house ... The church was repaired by the own hands of the community members, as it should be according to the charter. The territory of the temple is lovingly arranged. Everything here breathes peace, tranquility and comfort.
