Photo and description

In the center of Kaliningrad, on the main square of the city, there is the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. The main Orthodox church of the city was built in 2006 by the project of the architect Oleg Kopylov in the traditional Russian-Byzantine style. The white stone cathedral has three entrances, above which are located mosaic medallions-icons, the main of which is decorated with the image of Christ the Savior, the southern one - John the Baptist and the northern one - the Most Holy Theotokos. In the basement floor of the stylobate there is the lower church, consecrated in honor of the Image of Christ the Savior Not Made by Hands. The upper church of the cathedral, consecrated in honor of the Nativity of Christ, accommodates more than three thousand people, the lower one was designed for four hundred parishioners.

The beginning of the construction of the main temple of the city is considered 1995, when a capsule with earth from the Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Savior was laid in the foundation of the building. The ceremony was attended by Russian President Boris Yeltsin and Metropolitan Kirill. The upper church was consecrated by Patriarch Alexy II in September 2006, and the lower one - by Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad in September 2007. At the suggestion of the chairman of the Holy Prince Vladimir brotherhood from Germany, the lower church serves as a memorial church for the military glory of Russian soldiers.

In 2010, next to the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, a small church was built, consecrated in honor of the faithful Peter and Fevronia. The two-domed church, created for the wedding ceremonies, was built in the same style of temple architecture by the architect O. Kopylov. In December 2012, the new building of the grammar school at the Cathedral was consecrated.
