Photo and description

Garni gorge, located near the village of Garni, along the Azat River, is one of the natural attractions of the Republic of Armenia. The Garni plateau is located along the gorge.

Garni Gorge is considered one of the most popular tourist sites in the country. First of all, the gorge attracts attention with its amazing slopes, consisting of hexagonal prisms. The latter were called "Symphony of Stones", because from afar the rocks become very similar to a huge organ. The unusually regular shapes of the basalt columns are a delight. The pillars look as if they were specially carved by man and not by nature. It is not recommended to come very close to the columns because of the frequent rockfalls.

In addition to the delightful landscapes, the gorge is also interesting for its historical and architectural sights. So, on one of the cliffs there is an ancient temple, built, according to scientists, in the first century of our era. The temple was intended to serve the Greek gods. In 301, when Armenia adopted Christianity, the monastery also became Christian. Today, the Garni temple, despite its long history, has been preserved quite well.

One of the main attractions not only of this region, but also of the country is the famous Geghard monastery. The existing complex of Geghard belongs to the XII-XIII centuries, the architectural ensemble of which includes the chapel of St. Gregory the Illuminator, the Katoghike church, the sacristy of Gavit attached to the rock, the cave temple of the Avazan monastery, etc. Today, the entire monastery complex is considered a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.

An old single-span bridge built in the 13th century, located near the village of Garni on the Azat River, is also very popular among tourists.
