Photo and description

Composer Joseph Haydn was born in 1732 in the small village of Rorau, not far from the Austrian capital. The composer's father was a craftsman, was engaged in carriage business, and his mother worked as a cook. The family loved music; in the evenings, guests often gathered in the house to dance and listen to the singing of the head of the family. Musical abilities were passed on to children: sons Joseph, born March 31, 1732, and Michael, born September 14, 1737, both devoted themselves to music. Joseph had good hearing and a sense of rhythm. Soon the boy was sent to the church choir in the city of Hainburg, and later to the choir chapel at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. Joseph showed himself to be a hardworking and talented student, they began to give him solo parts. Haydn himself additionally devoted a lot of time to playing the clavichord and violin.

After leaving his home in Rorau at the age of six, the composer had the warmest feelings for him all his life, and in 1795, after returning from a triumphant English trip, he arrived in his native village to see his home and kiss his native threshold. During Haydn's life, the house had only a small bedroom, kitchen, living room, and a baroque room. At that time, the documentation room still served as a workshop for his father.

The museum was opened in 1959 in connection with the 150th anniversary of the death of Joseph Haydn. The creators of the museum tried to emphasize the cozy atmosphere that prevailed in the house of the composer's family. The rooms are furnished with original peasant furniture.

Joseph Haydn spent the last years of his life in a small house in Vienna. The composer died in 1809 and was buried in the capital. Later, his remains were transferred to Eisenstadt, where he spent a very large part of his creative life.

In 2009, the Year of Haydn was celebrated, on the occasion of 200 years since the death of the composer. Rorau also hosted the 50th anniversary of Haydn's house as a museum. Live concerts were held in the city.
