Photo and description

The Gallery of Modern Art is located in a building that, despite its young age, is already considered an architectural monument. Its construction began in 1940, and continued only after the war and was completed in 1951.

The building is the brainchild of the famous architect Edward Ranikar, who used an unusual technique for architecture: the window openings are framed with stone, and columns are installed in them. The stone blocks of the facade are in perfect harmony with the stone framing of the windows. Everything as a whole gives the building originality and modernity. An equally important architectural advantage of the gallery is its wonderful lighting. It is designed in such a way that it allows you to view the exposition, regardless of the time of day. And the sunlight passing through the stained glass windows softens the rooms and creates an even greater sense of space. This adds to the impressions when viewing the exhibited works.

In addition to its unusual appearance, the Gallery is interesting for its rich collection of works by Slovenian and foreign masters of the 20th century. In addition to paintings and sculptures, the permanent exhibition includes works of applied art. From local masters, the attention of visitors is usually attracted by the exhibition of works by the sculptor and painter Tony Kral.

There are also works by contemporary graphic artists in the permanent collection. And in honor of the graphic art of Ljubljana, the Gallery holds an international biennale every two years.

Despite the relatively small size of the Gallery, representatives of all major trends in contemporary art found a place of work there. There are also frequent thematic exhibitions that make this place attractive for connoisseurs of beauty of different generations and views.
