Photo and description
The Frauenkirche - Church of the Virgin Mary - is a majestic church, one of the most significant cathedrals in the city. It was built in the Baroque style at the direction of the Saxon Elector and King of Poland August the Strong in 1726-1743. The huge dome of the church collapsed during the bombing of Dresden by allied forces during the Second World War, and the authorities of the GDR decided not to restore the church as a reminder to the descendants of what happened. The restoration of the cathedral according to historical drawings began only after the unification of Germany. The grand opening of the Frauenkirche took place in 2005.
Opposite the church stands a monument to Martin Luther, created in 1885 by Ernst Rietschel.
