Photo and description

The Borisoglebsk Monastery, along with the Dmitrov Kremlin, is the main decoration of Dmitrov. It was not possible to establish the exact date of the foundation of the monastery. Therefore, it is customary to take 1472 as a starting point. This date is engraved on a cross found in the 19th century on the territory of the monastery.

The tragic page in the history of the monastery began after the October Revolution of 1917. The monks were evicted from the monastery, and a local history museum was housed within its walls. In 1932, during the grandiose Stalinist construction of the Moscow Canal, the museum was moved to another building, and the administration of the infamous Dmitlag was housed within the walls of the monastery, thousands of whose prisoners later died during construction. From that moment until 1993, the Borisoglebsk Monastery was under the jurisdiction of various state services, military units and vegetable warehouses were located here. In 1993 the monastery was returned to the Orthodox Church. From that moment on, its full-scale reconstruction began.

The main building of the monastery is the one-domed Cathedral of Boris and Gleb of the 16th century. In 1656, a miniature Alekseevsky side-chapel was added to the cathedral - the burial vault of the Chaplin noblemen of Dmitrov. The monastery ensemble is complemented by the Holy Gates with a small Nikolskaya Church of the late 17th century.
