Photo and description

Not far from Dmitrov, in the village of Lugovoy, you can see the old Nikolo-Peshnoshsky monastery. It owes its foundation to the student of Sergius of Radonezh - Methodius. In 1361, wishing to serve the Lord in solitude, and having received the blessing of his teacher for this, on the banks of the Yakhroma River, among impenetrable forests and swamps on a small hill, Methodius cut down a cell for himself. Gradually, other zealots of a godly life joined him and the first wooden church of St. Nicholas. Stone construction began at the monastery at the beginning of the 16th century. It received special development in the second half of the 16th century, when all wooden buildings were replaced by stone ones, and the construction of the fortress wall continued.

The monastery forms an irregular quadrangle. It is all surrounded by a stone wall with a covered passage, in some places built up with monastery buildings. In the middle of the monastery there is a five-domed cathedral church in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. Over the centuries, the temple was repeatedly rebuilt, it was surrounded by a porch on all sides, except for the altar.

The Church of the Presentation of the Lord occupies the second floor of the old monastery refectory of the first half of the 16th century, as evidenced by a letter issued by Tsar Ivan Vasilyevich. Above the holy gates of the monastery between 1685 and 1700, a gateway Church of the Transfiguration was built.

From 1928 to 2007, the liturgical life of the monastery was interrupted. All this time, a neuropsychiatric boarding school No. 3 for people with congenital mental disorders was located in the monastery. On August 21, 2007, at a meeting of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, it was decided to transform the parish of St. Sergius Church in the village of Lugovoy, Dmitrovsky District, Moscow Region, into the Nikolo-Peshnoshsky Monastery. So liturgical life was resumed in one of the oldest monasteries in Russia.
