The Museum of Precambrian Geology was founded on May 18 in 1961 as an independent unit in the general structure of the Institute of Geology. It is located in the city of Petrozavodsk on Pushkinskaya Street. Initially, the head of the museum was Viktor Yudin. At the moment, the head of the museum is Ruf Andreevich Khazov.

The main part of the museum collection represents field samples of the leading geologists of the institute, as well as various other organizations that conduct their permanent work in the territory of the Karelian republic.

Despite the fact that the original collection of the museum was quite small, at the moment the fund of the museum of geology is more than 3500 items to be stored, as well as a museum exposition, unfolding in two spacious halls.

In the lower hall there is an exposition presented by three informative sections: mineralogy, stomatitis of Karelia and the whole world - this section is a unique and only collection that has no analogues in any museum in the world; Quaternary deposits of the Karelian republic and the relief of the country. The upper hall presents an exposition dedicated to the most important and significant issues of geology, minerageny and metallogeny in Fennoscandia.

The Museum of Geology of the Karelian Scientific Center conducts educational work in the form of regular classes. In addition, the Institute of Geology participates in the educational process dedicated to the serious qualified training of specialists in mining and geological-geophysical profile at Petrozavodsk State University. The museum conducts educational practices for students of specialized faculties of secondary and higher educational institutions of Karelia and Russia.
