Photo and description

Sesto Calende is a small town located at the southernmost tip of Lake Lago Maggiore, where the Ticino River directs its course towards the Po River. One of the main attractions of this town is the Abbey of San Donato, built in the 9-10th centuries, which houses a painting by Bernardino Zenale from the early 16th century.

Another noteworthy place in Sesto Calende is the Municipal Museum, where you can get acquainted with the history of the many peoples who have inhabited these places for millennia. Particularly interesting are the artifacts that belonged to people from prehistoric times.

The natural history section displays a rich collection of Pliocene fossil shells that were found at Quelho. They serve as proof that that millions of years ago the territory of modern Sesto Calende was covered by the sea.

The archaeological section focuses on a collection of artifacts related to the Golasekk culture that flourished in the Sesia valley between the 9th and 5th centuries BC. Due to its favorable geographical location, its representatives were a kind of trade intermediaries between the Etruscans and Celtic tribes. Finds made in two settlements - Kashina Testa and Brickola - include cromlechs, burials, various funerary items from the early 8th century BC. and a huge amount of pottery from the mid-5th century BC. A tripod grave dated 800-750 BC, which belonged to a woman, is of particular scientific value, as evidenced by jewelry and personal hygiene items. Also in the museum you can get acquainted with the heritage of the Romans, Lombards and the Middle Ages.
