Holy Virgin Church description and photos - Bulgaria: Sozopol. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The title in English is Holy Virgin Church. Photo and descriptionThe Church of the Holy Mother of God (Holy Mother of God) is a Bulgarian Orthodox church of the late Middle Ages, located in the city of Sozopol, Burgas region. The church is located in the northern part of the old city and was built in the 15th century on the site of an older church. The temple is a three-aisled one-apse pseudo-basilica. Outside, this low building is easily confused with an ordinary house, such an architectural solution is explained by the fact that during the Ottoman rule, the churches in the country should have been no higher or larger than mosques (however, this could not guarantee that the temple would not be destroyed). The church was built of hewn stone and reinforced with wooden supports. Over the centuries of its existence, the building has been repeatedly reconstructed, so now it is very difficult to judge what its original appearance was. There are no traces of old frescoes inside the walls, but a valuable carved iconostasis (decorated with floral ornaments and scenes from the Holy Scriptures), a pulpit and an episcopal throne made in the 18th century by the masters of the Debar school have survived. In 1927, the building was declared an object of national historical heritage ("folk antiquity"), and later, in 1962, an architectural monument of national importance. In 1967, the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture also declared the iconostasis of the church an artistic monument of national importance.
