Photo and description

The Bascarsia Jamia Mosque is located on the main square of the old shopping center of Sarajevo - Bascarsia.

The name "bash" is translated from Turkish as "main", emphasizing the importance of this place for a medieval city. The marketplace was at that time the focus of city life. Bascarsija was founded together with the city itself in the 15th century. The mosque of the trading square was erected later - the first mention of it dates back to 1528.

A large, noisy and beautiful place in the city was built up with wooden houses and shops. Few survived a severe fire in the 19th century. During the reconstruction, the city authorities decided to reduce the area by almost half. The main thing is that the architects managed to recreate the eastern medieval flavor of the market - with a heap of shops, bakeries, shops and eateries, among which there are minarets.

The Balkan War of 1992-1995 spared the trading area, one of the few structures damaged was a market mosque. After the war, it was restored, completely restoring its historical appearance. In 2006, it was given the status of a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Bascarsija Mosque is small in size, it has one main dome, a portico or arched gallery covered with small domes and, of course, a minaret. The courtyard of the mosque, also small, is very beautiful. In the middle of a bustling shopping area, this courtyard looks like a small oasis - with a small fountain surrounded by a rose garden and two tall pyramidal poplars at the corners.
