Photo and description

Registan Square, which means "Plot with sand", is the central square of Samarkand, built up with historical monuments. The most famous among them was the most beautiful architectural complex, consisting of three madrasahs: Ulugbek, Sherdor and Tillya-Kari.

The most ancient building of this ensemble is considered to be a madrasah, built in 1415-1420 by the famous astronomer Ulugbek, the ruler of the Timurid family and named after him. This medieval university became incredibly popular in the East. Continuing the transformation of the Registan shopping area, Ulugbek ordered to build a monastery for dervishes (khanaka) and a caravanserai in front of the madrasah, where absolutely all visitors could stay. These buildings were dismantled in the 17th century, and other madrasahs appeared in their place.

Shardor Madrasah (translated as "House of Tigers") was built as a copy of Ulugbek's madrasah. But its architect Abdul-Jabbar decided to surpass the ancient architects who worked on the University of Ulugbek and created a huge dome, which led to the destruction of the Shardor school. It has now been restored.

The Tilla-Kari Madrasah was built in 1646-1660. There is a mosque next to it.

Among the attractions located on the Registan Square, there is also the Sheibanid mausoleum with a number of tombs. The tomb was built in the 16th century, when the Timurid dynasty was overthrown and the Uzbek family of Sheibanids came to power.

Behind the Sherdor madrasah there is the Chorsu trade dome - an ancient market, now transformed into an art gallery.
