The Theater Museum in Athens was founded in 1938 by the Society of Greek Playwrights. The famous Greek historian Yiannis Sideris, who specializes in the history of the development of the theatrical art in Greece, was appointed the head of the museum. In 1976, the position of the head of the museum was taken by the Greek playwright Manolis Kores.

Since 1977, the theater museum has been housed in the basement of the Cultural Center of Athens. On the basis of the museum, there is also an educational and research center for the Greek theater.

The exposition of the Theater Museum is divided by themes: modern Greek theater, opera, musical theater and variety shows, ancient Greek drama and puppet theater.
