Lon Wa Buddhist Temple description and photos - Philippines: Davao. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The name in English is Lon Wa Buddhist Temple. Photo and descriptionThe Lon Wa Buddhist Temple, located in Davao City, is one of the largest Buddhist temples in the Philippines and the largest on the island of Mindanao. It is located on Kabagio Avenue 3-4 km northeast of the city center. There is a Taoist temple 500 meters away from it, but since it is located behind a fence, tourists rarely visit it. But Lon Wa is one of the main tourist attractions of the city - it is unique already in that it is one of the few Buddhist temples on the territory of a predominantly Muslim region. Buddhism began to penetrate Mindanao in the 7th century AD. - evidence of this was found by archaeologists. With the advent of the Spaniards on the island, who widely introduced Christianity here, the number of followers of Buddhism has significantly decreased - today they are only about 3% of the total population of Mindanao. At the entrance, the guests of the temple are greeted by a statue of a smiling Buddha, calmly greeting visitors. The stairs to the temple are guarded by sculptures of lions - a traditional Buddhist defense against evil spirits. The simple architecture of the temple itself, with a green roof and grayish walls, gives it a very charming and serene appearance. Inside, on the walls of Italian marble, you can see the words of prayers, which can be said if desired. Around the temple there is a small cozy garden with palm trees and exotic flowers and walking paths lined with ordinary stones. The traditional lily pond is a real decoration of the garden. Monks and novices also live on the territory of Lon Wa - when meeting them, it is customary to greet them with a slight bow. Sometimes you can see here Chinese students in monastic vestments, who pray in front of the Buddha statue and sing ceremonial songs. An interesting detail - unlike the Taoist temple, you can take photos inside Lon Wa. We also recommend reading Historical and Memorial Museum of A. Ya.
