Photo and descriptionThe Church of St. John Chrysostom is located in the very center of old Yalta, on the Polikurovsky hill, surrounded by a cypress park. The first church on this site was built at public expense at the personal request of the Governor-General of Novorossiysk and Tavricheskiy Count M.S. Vorontsov as a cathedral church of the future city. The construction of the first cathedral church was carried out by the architect G.I. Torricelli. The church was made in the pseudo-Gothic style of country English villas, from sawn lime blocks, plastered and painted in ocher colors. The temple was decorated with five hipped domes covered with gold leaf. The main navigational and urban planning landmark of the city is the three-tiered bell tower of the temple, which is included in all the sailing directions of the world. Thanks to the construction of the Church of St. John Chrysostom, Yalta received the status of a city. The solemn consecration of the cathedral took place in September 1837 In the 80s. 19 Art. the temple underwent a significant reconstruction, which was carried out by the local architect N.P. Krasnov. According to his own drawings, he significantly expanded the building of the cathedral, and brought its cross-domed space into one dome of the Byzantine style. The dome, painted blue, was crowned with a large gilded cross. The funds for the reconstruction were donated by the mayor A.L. Wrangel. After the revolution, the church had to endure sad times: its former abbot, Archpriest Dimitri Kiranov, was shot, and a GPU grocery store was made from the temple, which was burned down in 1942. As a result, only the walls, dismantled at the beginning ... 50s Only the bell tower remained intact. Since 1994, the revival of the temple began. The author of the new project was the architect A.V. Petrova, based on the drawings of G. Torricelli. For three years the temple was rebuilt in its original form. In November 1998, the consecration of the church took place, as evidenced by the memorial table in the narthex. Today the Church of St. John Chrysostom is one of the main attractions of Yalta, without which the panorama of the city is simply unthinkable.
