The name in English is Kamari. Photo and descriptionOn the southeast coast of Santorini, there is a small resort town of Kamari. It is located just 8-10 km from the island's capital Fira. Kamari, as you can see it today, was rebuilt after the 1956 earthquake, which almost completely destroyed the city. The official name of Kamari - "Episcopi Gonia" - this resort received in honor of the ancient church of Panagia Episkopi located here. The construction of the ancient temple dates back to 1100. The name "Kamari" comes from a small arch that still stands at the southern end of the beach and is considered the remains of the ancient sanctuary of Poseidon. Kamari is one of the most popular resorts in Santorini. Its main feature is a stunning beach covered with black volcanic sand and small pebbles, length of 5 km. The beach is equipped with numerous sun loungers and parasols. At the edge of Kamari beach rises Mount Mesa Vuno, which is about 400 m above sea level (this is the second highest peak in Santorini). This mountain is of great historical importance, since in ancient times it was here that the ancient city of Thira (9th century BC - 8th century AD) was located - the most important strategic point of the island. Today, the archaeological site of the ancient city is open to the public. Kamari has a well-developed tourist infrastructure. Here you will find a fine selection of comfortable hotels and apartments. There are also many restaurants, bars, clubs and taverns on the Kamari promenade where you can have a good time and enjoy excellent Mediterranean and traditional Greek cuisine.
