Photo and description

One of the oldest monuments of wooden architecture located on the territory of the Kondopoga region is the old church of Peter and Paul. This temple is located on Lychny Island, or rather in the northern region of Lake Sandal. The construction of the temple took place in 1620, right after the devastating Polish-Lithuanian and Swedish invasions. The Peter and Paul Church is the firstborn of the Prionezhsky school of tent churches, and the Assumption Church, located in Kondopol, is considered the crown of the tent churches. The earliest information about the construction of a church on Lychny Island is mentioned in the Scripture Book written by Andrey Pleshcheev and compiled in 1583.

Over the long period of its existence, the Church of Peter and Paul has undergone a huge number of changes, for example, the tent-roofed bell tower was removed, which was adjacent to the refectory from the west; the windows were widened, both porches were redesigned, and the height of the tent was increased. And although this kind of change was carried out for a long time, in the 21st century the Peter and Paul Church was also changed. ZAO Lad, which is a project organization, developed a project for the restoration of the church at the insistence of the Federal Agency for Culture and Cinematography, and the restorers from Exiton literally breathed new life into the church. During the period from 2002 to 2004, work was carried out to replace rotten crowns from the southeastern and northern sides of the frame. In addition, the temple floors and the floors in the refectory were leveled, several logs in the octagon of the church were replaced, the porch and roof were restored, and a new head of the church was installed. According to the results of the restoration, we can say that the Peter and Paul Church has acquired its truly historical appearance.

In terms of its architectural style, the church is very similar to the Kondopoga church, on which there is the same octagon, located on a quadrangle, while the upper tier is slightly wider than the lower one. There is also a frontal belt, but at the Lychnoostrovsky temple it stretches over the four, but in terms of elegance and beauty it is much inferior to the Kondopoga one. The structure of the Peter and Paul Church is a bit squat and disproportionate, because the altar cut is very small, and the refectory looks very heavy and large.

One of the most beautiful details of the Peter and Paul Church is the porch, which consists of three parts: stairs, lower and upper platforms; the upper platform rests on wall logs-brackets. Carved pillars support the roof of the porch and serve as an extraordinary peculiar figured frame, characteristic of a typical Karelian landscape, which can be enjoyed from the top of the stairs.

The interior of the church is much different from the interior of Kondopoga and looks much more modest. The interior decors were poorly preserved, and some icons were badly damaged.
