Photo and description

The ruins are mainly the ancient buildings in the Old Bar. From the cathedrals that once existed to this day, thanks to timely restoration, only a few buildings have survived.

All these buildings - both preserved and not preserved - are proof of how the Old Bar was subject to various influences that were reflected, primarily in architecture. Gothic and Romanesque style, Renaissance and oriental motives - all these styles organically coexist on one territory.

The final desolation of this ancient city took place in 1979 after a devastating earthquake. But local residents do not give up their attempts to preserve the centuries-old memory of their past. The Old Bar is rightfully an open-air museum.

The Cathedral in the name of St. George was built in the XIII century, before there was another church, even more ancient - IX-XII centuries. At one time, the Cathedral was considered the most significant in Bar. A classic three-aisled basilica - this is how the Khram looked like before total destruction. Its walls were decorated with paintings, and services were held inside.

The cathedral has experienced many key historical events that are important for the Montenegrin people. Bishop Jovan, who lived in the 11th century, is buried here, and besides him - Archbishops Peter, Sergius and George, who lived from the 11th to the 14th century. In the middle of the 16th century, the Church of St. George was turned into a mosque by the Turks. Despite this, the tombstones of the clergy buried here have survived to this day - they were built into the facade of the building renewed after reconstruction.
