The Sharei Shalom Synagogue, the only synagogue in Jamaica, was built in 1912 on the site of an older building destroyed by one of the many Jamaican earthquakes. According to some reports, the Jews were one of the first colonists on the island - they arrived here almost immediately after the Spaniards of Columbus.
