Photo and description

In the very center of Novi Sad is the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary. Novi Sad is one of the cities in the north of Serbia. It was founded at the end of the 17th century, quickly gained fame as a commercial and cultural center and began to be called "Serbian Athens". The Catholic Cathedral is recognized as its main attraction and decoration of the central Liberation Square.

The first building on this site was a modest Catholic church, erected in the early 18th century. Subsequently, it was demolished, replacing it with another, more solid structure. This building was destroyed during the 1848-1849 revolution and was rebuilt twice. For the first time, in the opinion of the townspeople, anyhow, without preserving the historical appearance. Therefore, under the pressure of public opinion, the building was demolished and in 1891-1893 the building was built, which corresponded to the original appearance of this temple. The famous urban architect Georg Molnar acted as the architect.

The building of the cathedral was built in the neo-Gothic style, with a high bell tower under a sharp spire. Inside the cathedral, there is a tomb in which members of the city's influential families were buried. In the cathedral there are four altars, each of which was decorated in its own way: wood carvings, wooden sculptures of saints and angels. The walls of the temples were covered with paintings, an organ was installed in the cathedral, created by a master from Silesia by the name of Jagerford. There were only two craftsmen invited to decorate the cathedral, the rest of the workers who worked on the construction were local residents. The work of Molnar himself was adequately appreciated: inside the cathedral you can see his bust. In the tall lancet windows of the cathedral - stained glass paintings, and its roof is covered with colored tiles.

Currently, the building of the cathedral is becoming a venue for concerts of organ music.
