Photo and description

The Fronburg Palace is located 4 kilometers south of the city of Salzburg. For a long time it belonged to the old noble family von Kuenburg and was named after them - Kuenburgschloss. It is a typical example of the palace architecture of Salzburg.

It is known that defensive buildings appeared here during the Middle Ages, but the first small mansion with a park and agricultural land was built here only in 1620. Even then, these lands belonged to the Kuenburg family, many of whose representatives later became princes-bishops of the city of Salzburg. The modern building of the palace was already built in 1670. The Kuenburgs owned this castle until 1960, when their family almost completely died out. In 1965, the palace was used for filming the famous musical "The Sound of Music", and then was given to the University of Mozarteum, which still owns it.

The palace itself is a small two-story building with a central attic and a balcony. The building is covered with a pitched roof made of bright red tiles. The castle is surrounded by a large Baroque park, which is a masterpiece of garden and park art of the Baroque period.

In the park of the Fronburg Palace there are several graceful gazebos and gatekeepers, small stone fountains in the form of dolphins, as well as two artificial reservoirs, distinguished by geometric accuracy its shape. On the sides of the main alley there are centuries-old trees, and in the very center of the park is the Great Fountain, carefully restored at the beginning of the 21st century. The park itself is almost completely preserved in its original form and dates back to the 17th century.

Also on the territory of the castle there is an elegant water tower, topped with a pyramid-shaped spire, and an old dairy farm, preserved in an authentic form. Now it houses a kindergarten.
