Photo and description

The Palacio de Benicarlo, known as the Palace of the Government of the Province of Valencia, is located in Piazza San Lorenzo. This is an old three-storey building, the construction of which was started in 1482 under the leadership of the then famous architect Pere Conte, who was the author of this project.

By 1510, only the central part of the building was completed. The construction of the towers was completed by 1585. Thus, it turns out that this building was erected over a century during the heyday of such successive architectural styles as the Gothic and Renaissance. Nevertheless, the main part of the building is in the late Gothic style. A huge number of craftsmen of different specialties took part in the construction of the Palace, among which one can single out bricklayers, carpenters, artists, furniture craftsmen and many others. From a small courtyard you can get into the interior of the palace - halls with richly painted walls, multi-colored coffered ceilings and floors decorated with elegant tiles.

This palace has a very rich history. Since it was built, it has belonged to various influential families. Since 1485, it was in the possession of the Borgia family, in the middle of the 18th century, in a completely abandoned state, it passed into the possession of the Dukes of Gandia, then the Benavente family nest, and then the Osuna family. During the Spanish Civil War, it was the seat of the government of the Second Spanish Republic. Today, the Palacio de Benicarlo is the seat of the parliament of Valencia.
