Photo and description

Tremezzo, located on the western shore of Lake Como, lies between the settlements of Mezzegra and Griante, 20 km from the city of Como. The population of Tremezzo is approximately 1,300. Here, in the Rogaro district, the architect Pietro Lingeri was born, and it was this town that was the favorite vacation spot of Konrad Adenauer, the first Federal Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Today Tremezzo is a popular tourist resort, famous for its luxurious villas, the most famous of which, perhaps, is Villa Carlotta. It was built in 1690 for the Marquis of Milan, Giorgio Clerici. The total area of the estate facing the Bellagio Peninsula is over 70 thousand square meters. At the beginning of the 18th century, a characteristic Italian garden with stairs, fountains and sculptures was laid out around the villa, lost among lush vegetation. Of particular note are the statues of Mars and Venus by Luigi Aquisti. It is best to visit the villa in the spring, when it is surrounded by blooming azaleas and rhododendrons.

The architect who designed Villa Carlotta remains unknown. The final construction work was completed in 1745. Until 1795, the villa remained in the ownership of the Clerici family, and then passed to the banker and politician of the Napoleonic era, Giambattista Sommariva, on whose initiative the bridge and clock tower were built here. In 1843, Princess Marianne of Prussia gave the villa as a wedding gift to her daughter Charlotte, Duchess of Saxe-Meiningen. Unfortunately, shortly after the wedding, at the age of 23, Charlotte died, but her name remained immortalized in the name of the aristocratic villa.

There are other villas in Tremezzo, which, however, can only be viewed from the outside - they are closed to tourists. For example, Villa La Quaite was built for the Duke of Carretto in the early 18th century. It is surrounded by a lush garden with an exquisitely crafted wrought iron gate at the entrance. And Villa La Carlia was designed at the end of the 17th century by Antonio de Carli. She stands at the top of a small hill, and a garden is laid out around her.
