The Museum of the History of Gold is the only northernmost international museum. It is located in Lapland, in the small village of Tankvaara, located an hour's drive north of Sondakyla.

In these places, in the nearest rivulet Ivalo, in 1868 the first boom of the "gold rush" began. In the early 1900s, many gold prospecting companies were established. Now a whole Golden Village has grown up on this site with unique exhibitions. Copies of buildings from different Golden Villages of the world were built on the open-air site. The exposition is called “Auraria”. On its territory, tourists can feel the atmosphere of the times of the golden boom.

The building of the museum of the history of gold mining is built in the form of a round tray for washing gold. It works all year round and is a state value, therefore it is financed by the state. The museum displays exhibits from more than 20 countries of the world. The first exposition is dedicated to the history of gold mining in Lapland.

For 35 years the museum has been replenishing its collection. Moreover, during this time he managed to turn into a scientific research center. Today, every summer, the open Finnish gold prospecting championship is held here.

If you're lucky, you can find a big nugget and take it with you. By the way, the largest nugget, weighing 39.6 grams, was found by a tourist. And at the local bar, you can taste the liqueur with golden shavings.
