Lonsko Pole Nature Park (Park prirode Lonjsko polje) description and photos - Croatia: Sisak. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The name in English is Park prirode Lonjsko polje. Photo and descriptionThe Lonsko Pole Natural Park occupies the left bank of the Sava River where the Lonia River flows into it. The park was founded in 1998, the total area is 50,600 hectares. The territory of the park consists of small wetlands and lakes; a significant part of the park is occupied by oak groves and flooded meadows. For about 100 days (during the period when the Sava River floods), a significant part of the park is hidden by water. The resulting swamps provide shelter for a variety of animals and over 250 species of birds. More than 130 bird species breed chicks during the summer, including herons, spoonbills, bitters, as well as all kinds of predators, for example, the white-tailed eagle. White storks are considered the pride and symbol of the park. Every year these birds flock here, especially a lot of them can be seen in the Chigoch settlement (about 500 pairs). Storks build their nests right on the rooftops of local houses. The infrastructure of the park allows for unhindered bird watching, for this there are a large number of cycling and hiking trails, and there is also the opportunity to go horseback riding and on the water. You can go on an exciting sightseeing tour of the park, joining a group of tourists or on your own. Whichever option you choose, in addition to new knowledge of the flora and fauna of the area, you will be able to enjoy the local idyllic landscapes. Lonsko Pole is considered the largest park in the Danube basin and is protected by the state.
