Photo and description

The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was opened after reconstruction in 2000. Initially, the Orthodox Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary stood on this site. It was built in 1886 with donations from parishioners. It was a stone building with wooden domes.

During the Soviet era, when the state actively fought against faith, it was decided to demolish this church too. However, the church building was the only one built at the Novinsky cemetery in Gomel. Therefore, it was decided to demolish only the domes, and rebuild the building for the administration of the cemetery. Later, a film distribution point worked here, then - art workshops.

In 1990, the building was transferred to the Catholic Church. However, it took a lot of approvals and fundraising. The reconstruction began only in 1994. The work was carried out literally "by the whole world": Gomel Catholics came to the construction site, helping with whatever they could. Their work was crowned with a worthy reward: in 2000, the rector, Father Slawomir Laskovski, consecrated the revived church in honor of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos. Now this temple is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful in Gomel.

In 2012, another important event took place - Italian masters agreed to paint the temple. Fabio Nones and his son Ismael Nones decorated the altar of the temple with frescoes on the theme of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The frescoes are made in the Byzantine manner, more characteristic of Orthodoxy. Thus, Catholics pay tribute to the memory of the former Orthodox church, the skeleton of which was used in the construction of a Catholic church. The painting has now been completed - it is a genuine work of art. Everyone can admire it.
