Moni Paleokastro description and photos - Greece: Mykonos Island. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The title in English is Moni Paleokastro. Photo and descriptionPaleokastro Monastery in Mykonos, Cyclades, was built in the 18th century on the hill of the same name. The monastery is located on a hill next to the second largest village on the island, in one of the greenest places. This is a nunnery of typical Cycladic architecture, it gets its name from the nearby remains of the Gizi castle, also known as Paleokastro (which means Old Castle in Greek). The monastery is located near one of the two ancient cities on the island of Mykonos. A few meters from here there is a temple dedicated to St. Lasis, it is clearly visible from afar thanks to the beautiful tower, "dovecote". You can also see unusual prehistoric tombs, which are a giant granite cliff, which rises 3 meters above sea level. Above the gates of the monastery with thick snow-white plastered walls, reminiscent of the dual meaning of the building - the monastery and the fortress, a stone relief is visible, built in 1887.
