Photo and description

The Museum of Jakarta History, also known as the Fatahillah Museum or the Batavia Museum, is located in the old part of the city called Kota Tua. It is worth noting that Kota Tua, also called Old Jakarta or Old Batavia, is considered one of the most picturesque places in Jakarta.

The exact location of the museum is the southern part of Fatahillah Square (former Batavia Square), not far from the famous museum Wayang and the Museum of Arts and Ceramics. The building, which now houses the collections of the Museum of the History of Jakarta, was built in 1707 on the site of the former town hall of the early 17th century, the grand opening took place in 1710 - the building was opened by Abraham van Riebeck, Governor General of the Dutch East Indies. At the beginning, the building served as the city hall. It also housed the administration of the Dutch East India Company, and later - the government (during the Dutch colonization). The inside of the building is very beautiful, the rooms, of which there are more than 30, are richly decorated. It is known that in 1830 the national hero of Indonesia, Diponegoro, who organized the Javan uprising against the Dutch colonialists, was imprisoned in the building.

The Museum of the History of Jakarta was opened two centuries later, in 1974. The collection of the museum contains exhibits (more than 23 thousand) that tell about the prehistoric period of the city, its foundation in 1527, tell the history of the city during the Dutch colonization, which began in the 16th century and lasted until 1948, when Indonesia gained independence. Museum guests will be able to see historical maps, art paintings, pieces of furniture, as well as archaeological exhibits dating back to the prehistoric period of Indonesia. The museum is the owner of a rich collection of furniture from the 17th - 19th centuries.
