Photo and description

The Leo Tolstoy Museum-Estate in Khamovniki is located in Moscow, on Lev Tolstoy Street (formerly Dolgo-Khamovnichesky Lane). The writer Leo Tolstoy lived in this house with his family from 1882 to 1901. In 1920, V.I.Lenin visited Tolstoy's house. In April 1920, he signed a decree nationalizing the Tolstoy house and organizing a museum of the great writer in it.

The museum was opened in November 1920. The exposition of the museum contains authentic things of the writer. They are arranged in the rooms as it was during the life of the writer.

The exposition of the museum consists of sixteen rooms. In most rooms on the walls you can see the works of Russian painters: N. Ge, I. Repin, L. Pasternak, V. Serov and other artists. There are also sculptures of Trubetskoy and Ge, in which Tolstoy is captured in his Khamovnichesky house.

The exposition of the writer's office is especially interesting. Here Tolstoy worked on the novel "Resurrection", the works "The Fruits of Enlightenment", "The Power of Darkness", "The Living Corpse", as well as the story "Hadji Murat" and others. In this office, I. Repin painted the well-known portrait of Tolstoy at his desk. Leo Tolstoy's things are still on the table: a writing instrument, a folder, two cherry wood pens. There is a large sofa against the wall, on which Leo Tolstoy rested after walking and work. At the counter table, Tolstoy wrote when he got tired of writing, sitting at the table.

Visitors from all over Russia and from abroad came to his office here. Here Leo Tolstoy met with Maxim Gorky in January 1900.

Next to the office is the room in which Tolstoy worked. Here you can see a "sweatshirt" blouse, a white sheepskin coat known from the photo, a cap, underwear and other personal items. On a small table lie boots made by Tolstoy, shoe tools.

The hall in the house is high and light. It was visited by the best representatives of Russian literature and art of that time. Urgent creative problems were hotly discussed here. Many contemporary writers visited Tolstoy: Chekhov, Ostrovsky, Grigorovich, Korolenko, Garshin, Leskov and others. They left memories of these conversations in their memoirs. Frequent guests were artists, sculptors, composers and musicians, as well as theatrical figures, directors and actors.

The manor garden is decorated with lime and maple alleys, fruit trees, a green hill, bushes and flower beds.

In the wing there is an exposition dedicated to the social activities of L. N. Tolstoy. Here you can see many rare photographs of Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy.
