Photo and description

Ortisei is one of the main settlements located in the Val Gardena ski resort in the Italian region of Trentino-Alto Adige. The city with a population of about 5 thousand people lies in the northwestern part of the Dolomites and is part of the world's largest ski alliance "Dolomiti Superski". Thanks to the latter circumstance, many comfortable hotels, spas, shops and restaurants were built here, and today Ortisei can boast of an excellently developed tourist infrastructure.

The history of Ortisei dates back to ancient times, but only in the second half of the 19th - the first half of the 20th centuries the city began to develop economically - the reason for this was the construction of a road that connected Val Gardena with railways. In the same years, the local craft of woodcarving developed, for which Ortisei is famous to this day. And international tourism came to the territory of the Val Gardena after the discovery of the Dolomites, first by English tourists, and then by Austrian and German tourists. Today the economy of Ortisei, depending on the season of the year, is based mainly on ski and hiking tourism. The production of wooden souvenirs also makes its contribution.

The main attractions of the city are the Gerdein Museum and the local parish church dedicated to the feast of the Epiphany and St. Ulrich of Augsburg. The church was built in the years 1792-1796 in the neoclassical style, interspersed with some baroque elements. The architect was a master from Tyrol Josef Abentung, the dome was painted by the Tyrolean painters Franz Xavier and Josef Kirchebner. Inside the temple, you can see numerous sculptures, mostly wooden, made by craftsmen from Val Gardena. And in the corners of the presbytery there are four plaster statues depicting the Evangelists - the work of Johann Dominik Malknecht.
